Ecclesiastes 2:25
because who can eat and who can enjoy life apart from him?
(CSB)

Typically, when a verse starts with ‘because,’ this means that the prior verse contains some important context. In the proceeding verse, Solomon describes that “there is nothing better for a person than to eat, drink, and enjoy his work. I have seen that even this is from God’s hand” (Ecclesiastes 2:24). As we read in yesterday’s devotion, after chasing everything the world has to offer, Solomon came to the conclusion that everything in this world is essentially meaningless. However, he also makes the point that there is nothing better for a person than to ‘eat, drink, and enjoy his work.’ At first glance, one might conclude that these viewpoints contradict each other, but that is far from the truth.

The truth is: God made each of us on purpose and for a purpose. He has given each of us work to do while on this earth. I assume that each person has come to a point in their life where they have questioned their purpose or wondered the meaning of their life. Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, does us a favor by announcing his findings that only a life lived with God has ultimate purpose and meaning. Apart from God, life is void of meaning, but with God, our eating and drinking, working and even our ordinary everyday life finds meaning. True purpose and fulfillment come from God alone.
